After a nationwide search, consideration of perhaps 65 candidates and interviews with nine of them earlier this month, one person stood out for the job of president of the University of North Carolina's 17-campus system: Home-grown Tom Ross....
Ross told the UNC Board of Governors Thursday that he recognized this fundamental truth: "There is no institution more important to North Carolina and her future than the University of North Carolina. ... I have witnessed its transforming power first-hand." ... What makes Ross right for this job are the same things that made him the choice of Davidson College trustees three years ago: Experience, judgment, a commitment to public service and an ability to set goals, bring diverse factions together and produce results.
